How is the Defendant Notified?
After the complaint is filed, the defendant must be "served" with a copy. In the Philadelphia Municipal Court, if the defendant is located in Philadelphia, the Sheriff will personally serve the complaint. The court will notify you when service has been completed. If the defendant is located outside of Philadelphia, you must serve the complaint by certified mail. In that event, be certain to bring the green return receipt card to the trial.
